Katelyn Nicole Davis (Dolly)

katelyn-nicole-davis-suicide

Katelyn Nicole Davis (Dolly) 12 years old. She shared her heart with us, wanting some reassurance, and we showed her the ugliest part of being human – that part within humans, where they believe that everything is a competition and that they can only win by making sure someone else loses.

How does a 12-year-old make the decision to end her life and do so, exiting out of it with a string of apologies for letting everyone down?  What did we expect from her?  How could her life come and go and seem to mean so little to this world?  Such a beautiful, sweet girl.  Look at her.  How fitting is her nickname of “Dolly?”  Most of us will feel terrible about this little girl committing suicide and we will look at the actual people who did this to her in a “them” and “me” type of lens, but we all contributed to this and the many other cases of bullying that goes on everywhere. Is there anyone else but me that is fed up with this whole credit card fee scam that is going on right now with retailers and service providers?

I did not want a credit card. I held out as long as I could, insisting on paying cash until it became impossible to do the things I wanted/needed to do in my life without a credit card. Try booking a hotel room or a rental car without one.

So now after all the effort made to convince us that credit cards are much simpler and easier for us to use, they have reversed their position. We are being charged a fee for the extra effort they have to make to process our payment.  Most of us don’t even bother with cash anymore.  First, it was the ease and beauty of the credit card and then we had debit cards that directly accessed our bank accounts. A credit card can be slipped in a pocket, tucked in your bra, goes in a tiny handbag.  We were free!!   Once the internet happened, they created a system that made us even more dependent on our credit cards. Just enter your details and shop away.  Book anything.  Do it from the convenience of your home or during that wasted commuting time.  We could even process transactions with other people buying our services, through our phones. Happier, Healthier and More Fun

Lashes 1

I saw this “article” about people with long eyelashes being healthier, happier and having more fun.

PS –  they are selling “eyelash syrum” to make your eyelashes longer.

Is anyone really that gullible?

Yes, they scientifically tested people and found the only thing that made people healthier, happier, and “funner” – was the length of their eyelashes. I guess in a world hell-bent on “making” oneself more beautiful by padding their breasts and butts …. people ARE going to buy it.

It is actually an awesome idea. Think about it.

You go in for depression and the doctor prescribes you a set of false eyelashes because, according to this premise, you can even take an unhealthy, unhappy, “unfun” person and just by making their eyelashes longer -voila! – magic happens. They instantly become the life of the party.  In fact, they ARE the party.  I can see the psychiatric hospitals with all the patients wandering the halls with their false eyelashes on. Tears And Fears

boat refugees
Painting by:   Johann Van Den Noort – Boat Refugees

This is not a poster intended to persuade you towards a solution. We put up posters like this because of the emotion they evoke. I cannot imagine a single person I know that would not be moved by this poster – because we all love our children.

Our children are precious to us and we cannot fathom a situation so terrible where risking their lives on a crappy little boat, crammed with other desperate people, sailing to an unknown future and possible death . . . would seem like the only answer.

The problem is, there are people in the world who do not see children as priceless. For them, children are used and discarded without pause. They are simply weapons to be used against people who cannot even imagine such evil. They bank on it. They want the pictures of their dead bodies being pulled out of the sea, to show up on every Facebook page so that they can frame the debate with emotion.

It is entirely possible the boat people are all families fleeing unimaginable terror and deserve every ounce of our compassion.

It is, however, also entirely possible that they are victims, being used by evil people with an agenda more horrible than we can imagine. They may, in fact, be carefully placed to evoke the very emotion we all feel. Their parents may be perfectly willing to risk their lives to accomplish their goals. Continue reading

Shame on the Village.

village

One of the things I kept from my religious upbringing was a teaching that said “I give unto men correct principles that they may govern themselves.” Everything can work beautifully when we do not have to rely on others, the government, or laws to make us do the right thing. If each man was guided by a personal integrity that considered not only themselves but the whole of mankind, we would eliminate almost every problem we currently face.

But we don’t, and expecting every person to be evolved to that level is not practical and it has never happened, despite the awesome stories your grandparents tell about how much better everything was when they were a kid.

Throughout history, there has always been pretty much everything we see today. At times it was better hidden than today, but it was there. But our grandparents and to some extent my own generation did have something. We had the general consensus of “the village.” Continue reading

Fired With Compassion.

Unless you have been living under a rock this past week you have probably heard of the fires that are devastating Canada right now in the wake of a very dry year, hot temperatures and unforgiving winds. More specifically, the damage inflicted on Fort McMurray, the heart of the Oil Sands in the remote regions of Alberta.

There is a history here that is difficult and time-consuming to explain to someone who does not know Canada. Like all countries, we are the product of our history, and feelings and emotions run deep.  Events are always shaded with the colourings and outcomes of past experiences. There is a process in place, Canada evolves and changes with each passing year. Canadians live, eat and breathe these experiences and so of course, they understand them in a way that others cannot fully appreciate. Continue reading

Is Life Just a Fairy Tale After All?

fairy tales for women

Yesterday at the hair salon I picked up a magazine and read a quote by someone saying something to the effect that people wonder why everyone is so transfixed on Kim Kardashian and his response was that is was because she is so “real.”

I choked on my water.

How the hell did we get here? Can it be possible that an entire generation could be defined by their inability to know the difference between what is real and what is …not? Kim Kardashian is not like anyone I know or have met in the real world. Her lifestyle, her opportunities are not only unattainable for 99.999999% of the population, of what value are they to anyone? Including herself?

Is someone’s life really enhanced by having a whole separate closet for your choices of exercise clothes alone? And if it is, can someone explain it to me? Apart from having more of everything than anyone could possibly need or use in their lifetime, having each of those items singularly cost more than many middle class people’s weekly or even monthly salary, is obscene.  How does it help? Is she a better person because of it? Does she bless the lives of others more because of it? Is the world a better place because of that? And THIS is what we want people to think of as normal so that they all spend their lives trying to achieve it, fail, and then, also fail to have ever done one thing that might have actually been normal and worthy of a spent life? Continue reading
